Illinois Residents: Unclaimed Property Event Could Help You Reclaim Your Money

You might be surprised to learn that you could have unclaimed money or property sitting in the state’s vault.

On October 29, staff from Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs' office will be at the Saint Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library to help residents search for and reclaim their lost assets through the I-Cash program.

In Champaign County alone, more than 353,000 people are owed unclaimed funds, totaling over $52 million.

Across the state, this number balloons to over $5 billion in unclaimed money, including forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, and unpaid life insurance benefits.

Treasurer Frerichs highlights the importance of these efforts: "For most people, it is difficult to believe that they might have overlooked an investment account or forgot to pick up a final paycheck. However, the thousands of names in our database show that it happens too often."

The event will occur from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Saint Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library, located at 201 N. 3rd St., Saint Joseph.

If you can't make it, you can still check whether you have unclaimed property through the Illinois Treasurer's I-Cash program.
