Have you ever wondered if there is money out there owed to you that you don't even know about? You're not alone. Across New York State, billions of dollars in unclaimed funds sit waiting to be returned to their rightful owners.
From forgotten bank accounts to uncashed checks, there is a treasure trove of unclaimed assets, and a new initiative aims to uncover this hidden wealth for Westchester County residents.
Led by County Legislator Catherine Parker, the outreach campaign shines a light on the vast sums held by the state comptroller's office. Over $272 million is owed to people and businesses in Westchester alone, spanning forgotten savings and checking accounts, stocks, bonds, uncashed checks, refunds, and more.
“There is nothing like an unclaimed funds event to remind us that government is a consumer service industry,” said Legislator Parker. “We must ensure people receive what is rightfully theirs.”
At workshops and outreach events across the county, financial experts help attendees search online databases like the Office of the State Comptroller's Unclaimed Funds portal.
If you find unclaimed money in your name, the process to claim it is free and easy. “Unclaimed Funds: It’s your money. Get it back,” urges County Executive George Latimer.
With over $16 billion in unclaimed funds statewide, the odds are good there may be surprise money owed to you. This initiative shines a light on forgotten assets and makes it simple to claim what is rightfully yours.
As Parker summarized, “Our goal is to improve the lives of Westchester County residents and businesses by returning their hard-earned money.”
