Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming, M.D., has announced that approximately 143,000 unclaimed property checks, totaling over $34 million, will be mailed out on Friday, May 30, 2025.
This initiative represents the largest batch of unclaimed property checks distributed since 2018, reaching residents across every parish in the state.
Understanding Unclaimed Property
Unclaimed property refers to financial assets that have been abandoned or forgotten by their rightful owners.
These can include payroll checks, old bank accounts, royalties, utility deposits, interest payments, stock certificates, and life insurance proceeds.
Businesses are required to turn over such unclaimed assets to the Louisiana State Treasurer’s Office when they cannot locate the owners, often due to outdated or incorrect addresses.
Eligibility and Claiming Your Property
To be eligible for these unclaimed property checks, individuals must have assets that have been reported to the state as unclaimed.
The recent distribution was facilitated by a data match with the Louisiana Department of Revenue to update addresses, ensuring that checks reach the correct recipients.
For claims exceeding the automatic check threshold, approximately 2,500 individuals will receive claim forms with instructions on how to complete the process.
Identifying Legitimate Checks
Recipients should be aware that the checks will be blue and feature the Louisiana Department of Treasury logo.
They will arrive in a window envelope with the return address of the Treasury.
Treasurer Fleming emphasizes the authenticity of these checks, noting that some go uncashed each year due to skepticism or address changes.
Taking Action
Residents are encouraged to check if they have unclaimed property by visiting LaCashClaim.org or calling the Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Division toll-free at 1-888-925-4127, Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm.
With over $1.2 billion in unclaimed property awaiting rightful owners, it's advisable to conduct a search even if you haven't received a check.
This substantial release of unclaimed property funds underscores Louisiana's commitment to returning assets to their rightful owners.
Residents should remain vigilant and proactive in checking for unclaimed property, ensuring they receive any funds owed to them.
